100 youths to benefit in partnership between the National Youth Council,
Singapore Esports Association and IMG
SINGAPORE, 22 October 2021 – The Esports Youth Programme, a joint initiative by the National Youth Council (NYC), Singapore Esports Association (SGEA) and IMG, will provide 100 students from Nanyang Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, the Institute of Technical Education and other partner organisations with a rare opportunity to experience the inner workings of the esports ecosystem this November.
2 The organising committee has carefully curated 35 hours of experiential programming to be introduced in three phases. Phase 1 consists of a series of workshops and panel discussions with industry leaders and top content creators, curated by IMG and presented by partners Boom Digital Media, GosuGamers, Global Sports Innovation Center powered by Microsoft (GSIC), Lazada, Mailman Group, MyRepublic, Refract, SGEA, TikTok, World Freestyle Football Association and YouTube.
3 Phase 2 will immerse the group into the electrifying world of esports through the inaugural Global Esports Games (GEG), taking place in Singapore from 15 to 19 December 2021. The GEG is the Global Esports Federation’s flagship event which features teams from across the world participating in multi-title esports competitions and active esports. The youths will play an active role in the GEG, including helping with the event management for the GEG Opening Ceremony and the execution of safety measures for participants and players. They will also learn to curate content for GEG’s social platforms.
4 They will also have the option to sign up for Phase 3, where a select group can further their learning in the corporate world through short-term internships with GosuGamers, GSIC, IMG, Refract and the SGEA.
5 In 2021, Singaporeans are projected to spend US$207million on video games, with the average spend per user greatly outweighing the average spend in Southeast Asia1. The growing esports industry provides youth alternative career pathways in both Singapore and overseas, and the Esports Youth Programme presents young Singaporeans with a unique experience to pursue their own career aspirations in this industry.
6 “We want to challenge our young people to take ownership of their aspirations and the NYC is glad to have SGEA and IMG onboard as partners to provide our youth the developmental opportunities and hands-on experience in the esports industry,” said Mr David Chua, Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Council.
7 “We welcome the opportunity to give our youth an intimate peek into our world. All eyes will be on Singapore as the host of the inaugural Global Esports Games and there’s no better time for our youth to be in the thick of the action,” said Mr Ng Chong Geng, President of the Singapore Esports Association and member of the Organising committee of the Global Esports Games.
8 “Like every major sporting event, the true essence of the inaugural Global Esports Games is the community spirit and inspiring the next generation. Our goal is to bring the excitement of the event to Singapore and its people and we are pleased to be working with NYC, SGEA and all our partners to create the Esports Youth Programme,” said Ms Kennie Chang, Director of Business Development, Asia-Pacific at IMG.
9 Students at Nanyang Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic and the Institute of Technical Education can sign up for the Esports Youth Programme through their schools, from 25 till 29 October.
